Braille and tactile signs, made to order

We manufacture braille and tactile signage in our own studio in Ireland โ€” raised characters, contracted Grade 2 braille and tactile pictograms, in aluminium or acrylic, as single signs or as a scheduled set for a whole building.

Send us the floor plans or the door schedule and we will send back a priced signage schedule, sign by sign, with the specification written against the standard your building is being certified to.

What is on a braille and tactile sign

A sign that can be read by touch as well as by eye. Three things, in every market that regulates them:

  • Raised (tactile) characters. Lettering that stands proud of the sign face so it can be read with a fingertip, to the relief, case, typeface and character height the standard sets.
  • Grade 2 (contracted) braille. Not a letter-for-letter transcription โ€” contracted braille, positioned relative to the text and with the clearance the standard requires.
  • A tactile pictogram, where a pictogram is used. Raised, with the text descriptor alongside it that the standard requires.

Visual legibility and tactile legibility are two separate requirements, and a sign has to work for both.

Which standard applies to your building

That depends on the jurisdiction the building sits in and on who is certifying it, and it is not a question we will answer for you from a web page. Tell us which standard your building is being certified against and we will specify to it, and write the clause reference into the schedule we send you โ€” so your access consultant or certifier can check our work against the document rather than against our word.

You will not find a character height, a dot pitch, a mounting height or a contrast figure anywhere on this page. That is deliberate. The person signing off your building already has the standard in front of them; what they do not have is a manufacturer who will put the clause on the schedule and then make the sign.

What we make

Material
Aluminium or acrylic. Aluminium for schemes specified in aluminium throughout; acrylic for internal door and room identification where the schedule allows it.
Construction
Raised characters and tactile pictograms, with contracted Grade 2 braille beneath the text.
Formats
Door and room identification, sanitary facility signs, exit and egress signs, directional signs and floor identification.
Quantity
One sign, or a scheduled set for a whole building, priced line by line.
Finish
Specified to the luminance-contrast requirement of the standard that applies to the building.
Made by us
We own the production, so the schedule, the artwork and the manufacture are one conversation rather than three.

Not at drawing stage yet? Read our braille and tactile signage guide, or tell us the building type and we will tell you what we would need in order to quote it.
