Understanding DSDC Accreditation: What 1A Means

DSDC 1A is the gold standard for dementia-friendly products. This article explains the accreditation process, what evaluators assess, and how specifying 1A-accredited signage benefits your care home during regulatory inspections.

The Dementia Services Development Centre (DSDC) at the University of Stirling operates the world's most respected product evaluation programme for dementia-friendly design. Products submitted for evaluation are assessed against a rigorous set of evidence-based criteria. Those that meet every standard receive a rating from 1 (meeting minimum standards) to 1A (exceeding all standards). The 1A rating is the highest achievable and signals that a product has been designed with deep understanding of how dementia affects perception and cognition.

How the Evaluation Process Works#

Manufacturers submit physical samples of their products to the DSDC for hands-on assessment. Evaluators -- typically occupational therapists, designers, and dementia researchers -- examine every aspect: colour contrast ratios, typeface legibility, image realism, material quality, surface finish (checking for glare), tactile properties, mounting method, and overall usability. The evaluation considers the product from the perspective of a person living with moderate to advanced dementia.

Key criteria assessed during DSDC evaluation:

  • Colour contrast between foreground elements and background
  • Realism and clarity of pictographic imagery
  • Typeface readability and text sizing
  • Surface finish and glare resistance under typical care home lighting
  • Tactile properties for residents with visual impairment
  • Material durability and cleaning compatibility
  • Mounting height and positioning guidance provided by the manufacturer
  • Consistency across the product range

Why 1A Matters for Inspections#

Regulatory bodies across the UK and Ireland increasingly reference the DSDC in their inspection frameworks. The CQC's Key Line of Enquiry on the care environment, the Care Inspectorate's quality framework, and HIQA's standards for residential care all consider whether the physical environment supports residents with dementia. Specifying DSDC 1A-accredited signage provides documented evidence that your care home has invested in products validated by independent experts -- a powerful statement during any inspection.

Pro Tip

Keep a copy of your signage supplier's DSDC accreditation certificate in your inspection evidence folder. Inspectors may not ask for it specifically, but having it available demonstrates proactive quality assurance.

Not all products marketed as "dementia-friendly" carry genuine DSDC accreditation. The term is not legally protected, so any manufacturer can use it. Always verify accreditation status directly with the DSDC or ask your supplier for their certificate.

Beyond the Certificate#

DSDC accreditation is not a one-time achievement. Products are periodically reassessed, and the DSDC updates its criteria as new research emerges. Choosing a supplier with current 1A accreditation means your signage reflects the latest evidence base. It also means the manufacturer has committed to ongoing quality standards -- not just a minimum threshold at the point of initial evaluation.

DSDC 1A accreditation is more than a marketing badge -- it is an independent, expert validation that a product genuinely supports people living with dementia. When specifying signage for your care home, it should be the first criterion on your list.
